The “fatal frame: maiden of black water ps4 physical” is a game for PlayStation 4. It’s a horror game with the theme of the paranormal. The player controls a young woman who has lost her memories and must fight to survive in an abandoned mansion.
I recall the Fatal Frame series coming out on Playstation 2 for what seems like an eternity. They stood out from the rest of the horror games I was playing at the time, and they still do. There aren’t many that focus on Japanese folklore, despite the fact that it’s a large market. They had a good following, but their releases became dispersed and strange. Fatal Frame: The Tormented was first published in 2005, followed by Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse in 2008. Outside of Japan, however, it was not released. Remakes of the previous games were released, but Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, a new game, didn’t come out until 2014. A recreation of that product is now available on better platforms, seven years later. Is it, however, truly making use of that additional power?
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water follows many heroes as they attempt to unravel a mystery that is intertwined. They come across supernatural aspects throughout their investigations, and to combat them, a camera is employed to cause varying levels of harm in order to “kill” the ghosts. Upgrades to the camera might result in quicker film reloading or more damaging film at the tradeoff of slower reload speed.
The character models and foes, particularly the baddies, are all fantastic. Due of how eerie they would seem, designs for deceased shrine maidens were among my particular favorites. A red light signals the presence of an opponent nearby, and despite knowing that an adversary is approaching, spinning around and lifting my camera would reveal a ghost directly in front of my face, startling me. If it isn’t confrontations that tire out players, it is the whole atmosphere. Exploration into the woods in the dark and gloomy, coming around corners to find suicidal jumpers. With sadness and death, the game is very intense.
Controls, on the other hand, are a huge flaw, since movement is clumsy. It’s something I’ve never gotten accustomed to, and I’ve frequently been annoyed by it. One major irritation was the lack of rapid turn capability. Turning around in tight places was a great test of patience since ghosts may quickly emerge behind you. Movement was always a challenge, whether in or out of battle. It provides instructions for avoiding ghosts or extending out hands, but it never appeared to work for me.
When it comes to mobility, you always stroll at a glacial pace. There is a run option, but it is still very sluggish and, as previously noted, hard to maneuver about in. Running also seems to prevent the game from triggering points that would allow you to access doors or explore stuff. It’s as if the game expects you to stroll slowly the whole time in order to get those signals to pop.
Due to how much I like the previous Playstation 2 games, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a letdown. There was a lot of anticipation when another Fatal Frame was revealed, and it’s a shame we only got this. While it’s encouraging to see that the series isn’t dead and that there was interest in porting it to more contemporary platforms, I can only hope that the previous titles will be remastered or that a new game will be made. Fatal Frame is a fantastic series, but I’m concerned that Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water may lead the franchise to sag.
