THE ADDAMS FAMILY 2 REVIEW (2021)

When a sequel to 2019’s The Addams Family was revealed, I wasn’t shocked. That picture was unexpectedly excellent, thanks to an outstanding cast and strong comic aspects. The performers did a fantastic job elevating the material by creating realistic banter and familial dynamics. The Addams Family also had enough appeal to overcome the poor animation and loud pop music, as well as allusions to previous versions. I wasn’t really excited to watch The Addams Family 2, but it became something to look forward to on a regular basis. Let’s see how it compares to the original.

Wednesday is the center of The Addams Family 2 as she participates in the school science fair. Uncle Fester is the subject of her experiment, which includes the swapping of characteristics. She successfully imbues Fester with the intellect of her octopus Socrates, but with some unintended consequences. Wednesday is irritated by the fact that everyone wins the scientific fair simply for trying. Wednesday’s aloofness from her family inspires Gomez to organize a cross-country family trip. When a lawyer comes up, arguing that Wednesday isn’t an Addams by blood, problems ensue. He tracks them down on their holiday, hoping to snare the girl for his boss. Wednesday must choose between her family and her future when she is confronted with a shocking prospect.

The animation in The Addams Family 2 is identical to that of the first film. Although the first one was just published two years ago, animation continues to make significant technical advances every year. I had anticipated that the success of the first film would support a budget rise for the sequel. The textures, on the other hand, remain flat, and the motions are sometimes artificial. I wasn’t anticipating a leap in quality from the previous film’s graphics, but some attempt at improvement would have been appreciated. Jeff & Mychael Danna’s (The Good Dinosaur, Onward) musical score is still competent but nothing remarkable. Regrettably, The Addams Family 2 overuses pop music in the background. This was a problem in the previous picture, but this time they go all-in, apparently depending on the music to set the tone. I’m not sure why so many current films are filled with overplayed pop music. Just because it succeeded in Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t mean it should be your go-to for creating a film’s mood. If you require a song in almost every scene and your film isn’t a musical, there may be a larger issue to solve.

Addams Family 2

There’s a joke when a character starts singing, and it’s awkward. Only a handful of youngsters laughed at this forced performance at my theater, which was full. In context, I believe it’s a clever idea that might have been executed effectively. However, the whole sequence, complete with dancing bar customers, is uncomfortable and causes the movie’s screenwriters more worry than laughs. This is especially upsetting since I felt one of the original film’s redeeming graces was its humor. Because the film was humorous and handled its characters effectively, I was able to overlook the lackluster animation and odd character designs. However, most of the gags in The Addams Family 2 fall flat. I only recall laughing once and then cringing or rolling my eyes for the remainder of the movie.

I watch a lot of kid’s movies, so this isn’t something I’m unfamiliar with. Animated family fare, on the other hand, makes up a lot of my favorite things to watch. I don’t see why the jokes and visual gags in this film aren’t as good as they were in the first. There are a handful of allusions to real-life celebrities, as well as a bit of forced commercial placement. They weren’t amusing in the least, so I’m not sure why they were included other than to make the audience think, “Oh yes, that’s a real person/thing.” To be fair, the authors from the previous film seem to have been replaced by newcomers. Conrad Vernon, the director, isn’t even listed as a writer on this picture, which is strange since he was on the previous.

Addams Family 2

Unfortunately, The Addams Family 2 doesn’t only take a step backward in terms of comedy. The villain in this film pales in comparison to Allison Janney’s Margaux from the previous film. Bill Hader does a good job as Cyrus Strange, but the character isn’t really scary, humorous, or engaging. He attempts to get Wednesday to believe something, but it never deceived me or anybody else who watched the film with me. (For the record, two of them are children.) Wednesday’s parentage is treated as if it were a big, convoluted storyline in which you can predict what would happen right away. Cyrus’ “family” is odd in a negative manner and contributes nothing to the film. Ophelia, Pugsley’s daughter, finally offers him something to do, but at what cost? This is another another subplot that isn’t really amusing, unexpected, or interesting. They also make it obvious that Cyrus is a villain right away, yet they still portray it as a massive betrayal when he reveals Wednesday his true intentions. How naive do the film’s creators believe children are? Nobody like being lectured like this.

Addams Family 2

It’s unfortunate that Pugsley is just a supporting role in The Addams Family 2. Except for Wednesday and Gomez, none of the Addamses have anything to do. Even Gomez’s attempt to get Wednesday to like him more or anything is bizarre. In the first film, Wednesday was already the major character. Still, I felt the characters were more balanced there, and Pugsley had his own narrative. The prologue of the original film also featured Gomez and Morticia getting married. I’m not sure why they believe every movie has to be about Wednesday, or why they decided to make The Addams Family 2 even more about Wednesday. However, I believe that is a pity. One of the major attractions to this series and why it continues being reinvented is the eccentric characters of the family and how they bounce off of one another. To add insult to injury, they don’t do anything spectacular or novel on Wednesday. She rediscovers herself… once again. The moral of this film is the same hamfisted, worn-out one as the previous. Why did they even act out the scientific fair participation trophy scenario? This is never addressed or referenced again in the film. The difference is that it lacks the previous one’s charm, chuckles, and endearing side characters. What a waste of time.

Overall, unless you’re a huge fan of the series or have nothing better to do, I wouldn’t suggest The Addams Family 2. It’s not as amusing, fascinating, or inventive as the first. The voice acting is still excellent, but Pugsley was replaced, most likely owing to Finn Wolfhard’s busy schedule or his age. However, the performers will not be able to compensate for a film that seems to be deliberately working against them.
