What Players Should Know About Bonus Terms

Buy a game from Humble Bundle’s store and there’s a fair chance it arrives as a Steam key, a code for one title. Type it into Steam and that game joins your library; leave it in your inbox and it does nothing. Either way, the title was fixed at checkout, before the code ever reached you.

A PlayStation Store gift card works the other way round. A $50 card loaded onto a Canadian account sits in the wallet as a balance until you choose something from the catalogue, whether that’s a full game, an add-on or another month of a subscription. The person who bought the card chose the shop and the amount. Every decision after that belongs to you.

So the first thing to ask about any reward is whether it hands you a title or an amount. The answer shows which decisions arrived already made and which ones wait for you. Casino bonus terms sort the same way, because two familiar no-deposit offers come in those same two shapes. Casino play is not part of gaming, though. It’s real-money gambling for adults, and a bonus there is an invitation to bet, which changes what the terms have to cover.

A key and a gift card fix different things

A key carries more than a title. Humble’s support pages explain that keys are issued according to the buyer’s Humble account country or physical location at the time of purchase, so the region travels inside the code. Redeem it on a Steam account set to a different country and Steam returns an error. Humble adds that it can’t change the region on a key received as a gift, because the location was fixed on the day of the sale.

Some keys come with a date as well. Humble warns that a key can be deactivated or carry an expiration date, and it points buyers to the download page to check. A key also behaves like cash in one respect: it works once, for whoever types it in first. Add-on keys hang on a further condition. Humble’s support article says a DLC key returns an error on a Steam account that doesn’t own the base game, and when a bundle includes both, it suggests redeeming the base game’s key first.

By the time you reveal the code, then, the game, the storefront and the region are all decided. Redemption day is the one open question, and an expiry date can close it.

Store credit fixes a different set of things. PlayStation’s terms of service for Canada say the wallet accepts only prepaid cards whose currency matches the country set on the account, so a Canadian card fills a Canadian wallet in Canadian dollars. The wallet has a ceiling too, and a card that would push the balance past it can’t be added until some money is spent. Product codes on the same store can carry a deadline as well: the terms say some must be used before a stated expiration date. Inside the store, though, nobody has chosen your next purchase.

Neither form is better. A key suits a giver who knows exactly what the other person wants, and a card suits one who doesn’t. Each trades certainty for freedom at a different point, and the small print on each one exists to describe that trade: where it can be spent, in what currency, on which platform and before which date. Once you know which of the two you’re holding, you know which lines of that small print will matter.

Twenty-five spins and twenty-five dollars are different rewards

Casino no-deposit offers often appear in two forms that look alike on a banner: 25 free spins, or $25 in free bonus money. The number matches, and that’s where the likeness ends.

On the page where BonusFinder lists free spin casino no deposit free $25 deals for players in Canada, the two sit next to each other in a short section called 25 Free Spins vs $25 Free, and its first line tells readers not to conflate them. The spins, it explains, are bets fixed in advance on specific slots, while the $25 is a bonus amount that can be wagered on the games the offer allows. It adds that each type carries its own wagering requirements and that the terms deserve a read before anyone claims.

Set beside the gaming examples, that split holds up as a description of how the two offers are built. Twenty-five spins work like a key, with the slot and the bet size written into the offer the way a title is written into a code. The $25 works like a gift card balance: the terms name a sum and the games that can draw on it, and each bet within those limits is the player’s call. The table puts the four rewards in one place.

Reward unit

What it locks

What stays open

What to read in the terms

Game key

One title, one storefront, the region set at purchase

When you redeem it, inside any deadline

Platform, region, redemption date

Store gift card

One store, one currency, the account’s country

Which item from the catalogue you buy

Currency, account country, wallet limit

25 free spins

The named slot or slots and a set stake per spin

When you play them, inside the validity period

Which slots, the validity period, the wagering on whatever the spins return

$25 bonus money

An amount sitting in the casino balance

Which eligible game takes each bet

Eligible games, wagering requirement, validity period, any cap on winnings

The second column shows the split: the key and the spins lock the most at the start, while the card and the bonus money leave the most open. One column is missing from the table, though, and it applies to every row: where the reward can be used at all.

Every reward carries a border

Region locks are familiar to anyone who has bought a key from another country’s store, but storefronts draw borders too. When Volition announced its Saints Row reboot in 2021, the PC version was set to be exclusive to the Epic Games Store. The game came out in 2022 and reached Steam about a year later, after the exclusivity deal between its publisher, Deep Silver, and Epic had run its course. For that first year, a PC copy meant an Epic account.

Location draws a border of its own. The same Humble support article says Steam’s Unavailable in Current Region error typically shows up when someone is travelling or using a VPN and tries to reach a region-locked game where it isn’t offered. A key bought at home can run into that wall on a trip, because the lock follows where the player is as well as what the account says.

Casino offers carry borders as well, drawn by provinces rather than storefronts. Each province sets its own rules for online casinos. Ontario opened a regulated market to private operators, and its regulator, the AGCO, bars them from advertising bonuses to the general public.

The 25-spins page shows that line on the map in its small print. One listing’s terms include the words Canada only (excl Ontario), which does the job of the region code inside a Humble key. A border like that tells you where an offer is shown. It doesn’t tell you who licensed the casino behind it.

That gap matters. Many brands that appear on lists for players outside Ontario hold licences from regulators abroad, not from any province. Whether provincial and federal law reaches those sites, and how far, is a question Canadian regulators and lawyers have argued over for years without a final answer. So the border on a casino offer comes with less certainty than the one on a key, and the terms page is the place to see whose rules the casino says it follows.

A key delivers a game, a bonus delivers a bet

The title-or-amount question explains the shape of a casino bonus. It doesn’t make the bonus behave like a game purchase where it matters most, in what a player ends up with.

Humble’s first bundle shows the gaming side. Buyers in May 2010 could pay whatever they liked for five indie games, World of Goo and Aquaria among them, and send some or all of it to Child’s Play or the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The games came as DRM-free downloads for Mac, Linux and PC, and the offer ran for one week, until May 11. Early on, the average payment was about US$8, and some paid US$500.

The price was open and the contents were fixed: whatever anyone paid, they got the same five games. A casino bonus turns that around. The terms fix the inputs, meaning the slot, the stake, the amount and the list of eligible games, and they leave the result open. Twenty-five spins can return nothing at all, and a $25 balance can run down to zero before any wagering requirement has been met. No line in the terms will change that.

There’s also a second stage with no gaming equivalent. A redeemed key is finished: the game sits in the library and the code has done its job. Whatever spins or bonus money return usually arrives with conditions of its own, and the 25-spins page’s terms section names the ones to look for, from wagering requirements and maximum win caps to the validity period and the games that count. It also warns that spins left unused when the validity period ends are forfeited, and it notes that no-deposit spins are credited when a player signs up and opts in.

The next offer an adult player sees will probably lead with a number. Whether it’s a title or an amount says more than the number does, and the terms page says more than either. A key or a gift card can explain itself in a line or two. A casino bonus needs a full page because what it hands over is a stake rather than a product. No offer will set a spending limit on the player’s behalf, so that number is the one to fix before claiming anything.
