Delisting
In October of 2014, the Xbox Originals version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for Xbox 360 was delisted and replaced with a new ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Games on Demand)’ version. While this release marked the tenth anniversary of the game’s initial PlayStation 2 release, the delisting was also essential due to the expiration of license for some of the game’s tracks.
On the PlayStation 3, the PS2 Classics edition of San Andreas was apparently delisted in October 2014, but eventually reappeared and lasted until a different 2015 release took its place. The current Xbox 360 (2014) and PlayStation 3 (2015) versions are based on mobile ports, and although they provide some enhancements over the emulated originals, there are a few differences. Due to licensing issues, the music has been adjusted, new problems have slowed development, and the controls and handling have been altered. Owners of any version of San Andreas on Xbox or Xbox 360 will only be able to access the 2014 version when putting the disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S to download the backward compatible package owing to these changes in licensing.
On October 8th, 2021, Rockstar Games revealed that a 20th Anniversary Grand Theft Auto trilogy was in the works, and that current copies of the original three 3D games (GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas) will be removed from digital retailers beginning the week of October 11th, 2021.
Rockstar Games apologized for the poor success of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition after its terrible debut and temporary delisting on November 11th, 2021, and pledged help in the future. The company also stated that the original PC versions of the three games will be available in a new package on the Rockstar Store “shortly.” Between November 11th, 2021, and June 30th, 2022, owners of the Definitive Edition on the Rockstar Games Launcher were guaranteed complimentary copies of the original PC editions.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on PlayStation 3 was relisted in North America for no later than November 20th, 2021, together with the ‘Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy (PS2 Classics Bundle)’. Please keep in mind that the bundle was launched in 2015, and the version of San Andreas included in the bundle is unlikely to be the original PS2 Classics edition.
